Speaker: Paula Buenger, Business Engagement Consultant

A Spencer, Iowa native, Paula Buenger returned to her hometown early in her career as a journalist and never left. Buenger, a graduate of Central College, in Pella, was involved in all aspects of community newspaper work, serving as a photographer, sports editor, group editor and, for over 20 years, as publisher of Rust Publishing, NWIA, which served the communities of Spencer, Storm Lake and the Iowa Great Lakes. Along with multiple writing and photography awards, in 2018, she was honored as an Iowa Master Publisher from the Iowa Newspaper Association. 

In her role, she was able to live her passion of strengthening community through outreach and deep involvement in events and activities. She served on numerous boards and committees, both locally and statewide, including 12 years on the Iowa Newspaper Foundation board, serving as its president, among other roles. As president of the Clay County Heritage board, she spearheaded fundraising which supported the construction of the organization’s facility, located in downtown Spencer. 

Paula and her husband Joel have one son, Andrew, who, with his wife Kaitlyn, live and work in Des Moines. In her spare time, Paula is a passionate flower gardener, completing the Iowa Master Gardener program this past summer. She’s also an avid photographer, traveler and bookworm.  

She is thrilled to join the IWD team in the new role of Business Engagement Consultant, connecting business and industry with the wide array of programs and services IWD offers.
